History and Incredible Mexican Food in the San Fernando Valley
Here at Ernie’s Mexican Restaurant in North Hollywood, you can experience delicious, authentic Mexican food. It all started with one man’s dream. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Ernest U. Cruz started the “Ernie’s” legacy after serving in World War II. With $1,800 to his name, Ernie launched his first “Ernie’s Taco House” in Lincoln Heights—serving up to 25 customers at a time.
Having spent some of his younger years in Los Angeles and neighboring areas—like South Gate and Bell Gardens—Ernie then expanded his franchise, owning nine restaurants, from West Covina, Hollywood, Glendale, and the last standing Ernie’s (#3) in North Hollywood, CA.
Serving Authentic Mexican Food Since 1952
Ernie’s success was largely due to his focus on using the freshest quality meats, cheeses, and vegetables, while implementing the use of what restaurants used to call the “cheese-melter”, which guaranteed a simultaneous hot plate and food upon delivery to the table. Despite his passing in 1978, Ernie’s Taco House #3 in North Hollywood strives to deliver on Ernie’s goals from the start of his career.
Today, Ernie’s Mexican Restaurant is proud to continue serving the same delicious recipes from the original Lincoln Heights kitchen. With a chef who has worked with Ernie himself (48 years and counting), Ernie’s Mexican Restaurant is happy to deliver the same flavors Mr. Cruz shared with his beloved customers.
